When your opener will not close

Keep the opening clear

If a garage door will not close normally, keep people, pets and objects away from its path. Safety sensors are designed to help prevent closing on an obstruction. Chamberlain Group advises stopping use and contacting a professional if the door fails to reverse when its safety sensor beam is interrupted.

Do not bypass sensors or increase force settings to make the door close. Use the instructions for your exact opener model when discussing any user-level checks.

Record what happens at each control

Tell the technician whether the remote, keypad and wall control behave the same way. Note whether the opener starts, the door moves a little and reverses, or nothing happens. If a light flashes or the display shows a message, write it down exactly. A model-specific message can be more useful than a general guess about the motor.

Mention recent changes

Explain whether the concern followed a power outage, an impact, stored items being moved or another change in the garage. Include the opener model if it is safely readable from the ground. Do not climb near operating equipment or take covers off to gather information.

Also mention visible door damage or uneven movement. A problem noticed at the remote can involve the door itself, so the opener and door may need to be considered together.

Arrange an assessment

A service request should include your contact details, ZIP code and the symptoms you observed. Avoid repeatedly operating a damaged or unstable door while waiting for a response.

See our opener service page or request service. Availability and the next step are confirmed directly.
